Familyhood is a community development strategy written by David N. Roach which defines schools as the center for development in any community.
Familyhood is an inter-generational strategy that promotes collaboration at every school between it’s Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association. If schools do not have these organizations functioning at school sites, the monthly volunteer day- 1st Saturdays is used to plan them into existence.
Familyhood is driven by two motto’s. 1) Friends of School- which states, “Every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.” 2) Mo’ Better Food- which states,”Every School shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.”
1st Saturdays is the “do now” strategy to advance a community towards Familyhood. 1st Saturdays represents the 1st Saturday of every month as the official monthly volunteer/recruitment day.
Basically, once a month, every 1st Saturday of the month, students, parents, alumni and community partners meet and volunteer at the school garden.
Space and time is also dedicated to hearing updates from representatives of the schools Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni.
